News Update May '08

Hello everyone,
We wanted to give you all an update on the Indian gathering we went to in Cuiteco and the trip to the canyon village of Guacaivo. Marcos and I made the two hour plus trip into the mountains to the village of Cuiteco. Don Burgess (a missionary in this area for 35 years translating the bible into the Lower Tarahumara) had e-mailed me earlier that week telling me we were scheduled to show the Jesus film at 8:00pm on Saturday night. We got there early enough to see all the traditional dancing and games that take place during these gatherings. We had everything setup in the church yard of the local Catholic church and ready at 8:00 that evening, but we kept getting pushed back later and later. At midnight there was no indication we were going to be allowed to show the film, we decided it was time to pack up and head back to Creel.
We did find out a day or so later that there were also some "brujos" or village witch doctors that had influence with the village governors and so there never was "time" for us to show the film. We did get to meet some new people and see some things the average tourist never sees. Only God knows the reason for why or why not and we have to believe it was in His plan.

I just got back from the canyon village of Guacaivo. Ed Albrite brought another work group of twelve people from Montana and Idaho in on Tuesday (May 20th) of last week to go to one of the larger canyons in the Copper Canyon. We spent the first night sleeping under the stars on the canyon rim at the home of Antonio and Ramona. The next day we made the eight mile hike down into the canyon, crossed the river and up to the village of Guacaivo. The people of the village were very glad to see us again. They were anxious to see more "peliculas" or films. The work group came down to finish some of the work to get the alberge ready for the students to begin school in September. An alberge is a kind of dormitory for kids to stay at during the week so they don't have to walk great distances every day just to get to school. The group poured concrete, built a roof over the new bathrooms and other details to get everything ready. In the evenings we showed films and fed the people who came down out of the mountains. The group had no interpreter with them so I was able to help out with that problem. I had to leave a few days earlier than the group to return to Creel to prepare to go back to Mississippi.
